You Aren’t Behind Friend

The Truth That Shifts Everything

Good morning, beautiful friend.

I want to take you back to a recent Sisterhood session—one of those where we start with a thought and, before we know it, we’re off on a soul-fueled soapbox (in the best way). And friend, what bubbled up this time was too good not to share.

So here it is:
You’re not behind.

I’ve been weaving this idea into our guided planning sessions lately, and it continues to resonate so deeply with the women I work with. But let’s be honest, the moment we feel behind, we also start backpedaling.

“If I had just gotten that done last week…”
“If I had been more focused yesterday, maybe I wouldn’t feel so overwhelmed today…”

Sound familiar?
That whole narrative of “behind” is actually a trick. It’s not a feeling. It’s a story we tell ourselves. And when we buy into it, we lose the gift of this moment—right here, right now.

The Present is Where Your Power Is

The second we come back to the present moment, we reclaim our power.

No past to regret.
No future to control.
Just now.

Now might look like wiping down a whiteboard while your toddler narrates her blueberry dreams (true story). Now might look like one deep breath before you open your planner. Now might look like choosing peace over pressure.

And from that now—you get to decide what happens next.

Start With Gratitude

One practice I love (and teach often) is journaling gratitude for the journey—not just the blessings, but the actual events, growth points, and even the hard stuff that shaped you.

Think of it like dropping little pins on your life’s map. Each one matters. Each one led you here.

Need a prompt to get started? Try this:
What are three “pins” on my path that helped shape the woman I am today?

Then, Just Do the Next Right Thing

If “behind” is a lie, “the next right thing” is truth.

This phrase has shown up in my life in a few places lately—first from Christy Wright’s book Take Back Your Time and again during a Bible study where we talked about how doing the next right thing is actually a form of righteousness. It honors both our faith and our forward motion.

Sometimes that next right thing is lighting a candle.
Sometimes it’s finally calling the insurance company (ugh).
Sometimes it’s a bubble bath on a Tuesday.

Whatever it is, it doesn’t need to be perfect. It just needs to be yours.

Responding to the Prompting

Here’s the other truth: when something nudges you—text that friend, send that card, say that prayer—you often have everything you need to do it in under 30 seconds.

That idea comes from Kody Bateman’s book Promptings, and it’s a concept I love.

Sometimes the next right thing is just listening to that inner nudge. Acting on it quickly. Because, trusting it matters.

What’s In Your “Next Right Thing” Toolbox?

In the sisterhood, we started imagining what it would be like to have a treasure chest of our own “next right things.” Little tools we can reach for when the day feels heavy, off track, or out of rhythm.

Here’s what a few of mine might look like:

  • Sending a handwritten note
  • Making one brave phone call
  • Taking a bubble bath
  • Turning up worship music
  • Eating blueberries (my toddlers fix to just about any situation, lol)
  • Journaling gratitude

What about you?

What can you put in your toolbox that brings you back to now?
What helps you remember—you’re not behind, you’re just being invited forward?

Sweet friend, you don’t need to catch up—you just need to come back. To now. To yourself. To the next right thing.

You’ve got this.
And if all else fails… blueberries.
